Stephen has been involved in mumming since the early 1970s. He makes hobby horses, beasts of disguise and giants using traditional methods. He is the master of the Hobby Horse of the Year Show held at the Sidmouth Folk Festival.
Stephen founded the Mummers Symposium in 2011 – an annual meeting of mummers, folklorists and academic researchers from around the world. He is also a musician and dancer, founder of the International Mummers Festival, the International Pipe and Tabor Festival, and The Taborers Society.
